Parnell Early Childhood Centre
Parnell Early Childhood Centre promotes, enhances and supports children's care and learning.
This centre primarily accommodates children aged between 2 and 5 years, but has spaces for four children aged from 20 months to 2 years. This allows a small number of older children to transition through from Parnell Infant and Toddler Centre (next door) when they are ready to join those over 2 years old. The younger children play and learn in a large well-resourced, engaging space, and the older children, in the Kindergarten, participate in a programme that includes some formal learning experiences evolving from an emergent curriculum that supports their transition to school.

Philosophy
As a team, we know that children become competent and confident learners when they believe in themselves. Our centres focus on;
Embracing individuality and nurturing relationships
Our childcare centre is committed to providing a nurturing and caring environment where children are respected and affirmed as individuals, where their culture is acknowledged and supported and where their family are included in the centre activities. Children are precious to us, we want them to form and experience many meaningful and rewarding relationships at the centre.
Providing stimulating learning opportunities
Our friendly teachers are focused on creating stimulating opportunities for children to expand their knowledge and reasoning skills, to develop their physical skills and to express themselves creatively so that they can gain confidence to discover the world they live in and reach their full potential.
Our programme is based on the New Zealand early childhood curriculum policy called
Te Whaariki.
Transition to Schools programme
The transition from early
childcare education to primary
school is a significant step in
the life of a young child. The
new physical environment,
daily structure, teacher/student relationships, rules
and peer interactions that
children will encounter at school all present potential
areas of
adjustment from the life they have become accustomed to at a
childcare centre. Some children cope well with these transitions, whilst others will
experience varying levels of anxiety depending on a range of
factors including maturity, social skills and independence.
Parnell Early Childhood Centre has established a Transition
to School programme for children aged four and over
because we believe they (and their parents/caregivers) benefit
from knowledge, understanding and competence in making a
confident and ultimately more successful transition to school. Our programme combines a ‘life at school’
orientation with an introduction to the methods of
teaching and learning, including a focus on early
reading, writing, science, the arts, maths and
technology.
